Tonal Separation: Memories of Imagination
We cannot always remember fully time or place; for example we cannot possibly remember every detail, every sense, every idea that we had in that place. With this I shall now introduce my works from 2002. They are abstractions from realism where I have filtered different tones from the images and creates washes or shapes of tones. I named this process abstract subject realism. I was very interested in visually representing the gap in vision when history is distorted by us trying to re-remember whole contexts. Here i have overpainted a movement of tonal sections from their form to represent this gap. Now the years have passed I probably need to add more tones to represent further gaps in vision. I also overpainted colour images with white so when light was shown through the paper image the history of the colour was revealed. I was very interested in churches as architecturally they have massive space and tonal range like a landscape. I was also interested in their huge sense of history that cannot be fully captured. I have never visited all the churches and places I care about in the world so there are huge gaps in my vision and imagination of different senses of place. I feel though these places are important to remember and this gap in vision is important to recognise.
